Description
A Gorgeous Mason’s Ironstone China Jug depicting the fruit basket design. A lovely colourful jug.
A Mason’s Ironstone jug decorated in the Fruit Basket pattern, produced by the long‑established Staffordshire pottery founded in 1813. Mason’s ironstone is known for its dense, durable body and bold transfer‑printed decoration, a style that continued through several ownerships — most notably the Ashworth family after 1862, whose name appears on many later backstamps.
The Fruit Basket design sits within Mason’s broad family of richly printed tablewares that were made throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period when ironstone production was widespread and highly competitive among English potteries. Pieces from this era typically feature underglaze transfer printing with hand‑applied enamel colour, giving the pattern its characteristic depth and vibrancy.
Jug forms like this — sturdy, practical, and slightly architectural — are typical of Mason’s utilitarian ironstone shapes. Collectors value them today for their strong visual presence, decorative appeal, and connection to one of England’s most influential ceramic manufacturers.
