Description
A very attractive Awaji muscle vase with a central band of autumn leaves. This vase dates between 1922 – 1939.
Awaji Pottery comes from Awaji Island in Japan, where kilns active from the late 19th century through the early 20th century produced ceramics known for their striking glazes and elegant forms. Makers on the island experimented boldly with colour, creating pieces in vivid greens, deep purples, soft yellows, and the distinctive turquoise tones that collectors often associate with Awaji ware.
The pottery ranges from simple everyday vessels to sculptural vases, jardinieres, and figural pieces shaped with a refined sense of balance and proportion. Many works show influences from both Japanese tradition and Western Art Nouveau, resulting in designs that feel timeless yet unmistakably handcrafted.
Today, Awaji Pottery is admired for its expressive glazes, subtle artistry, and the unique character that comes from small‑kiln production. Each piece carries the quiet charm of its island origins and remains a favourite among collectors who appreciate colour, craftsmanship, and the beauty of early modern Japanese ceramics.
