Description

Description

Royal Doulton Charles Dickens ware bowl depicting “Poor Jo” D5175.

A Royal Doulton Dickens Ware bowl featuring “Poor Jo,” one of the most recognisable characters from Charles Dickens’ Bleak House. Doulton introduced its Dickens‑themed series in the early 1900s, using illustrations by Joseph Clayton Clarke (“Kyd”) and Harry Tittensor, whose character studies were adapted into underglaze transfers for tableware and jugs.

The Poor Jo design appears on bowls, plates, and small serving pieces produced mainly between 1908 and the 1930s, during the height of Doulton’s Dickens Ware output. Pieces from this period typically show Jo in his ragged clothing, echoing the original Victorian illustration, with the scene framed by Doulton’s characteristic sepia or brown transfer palette.

Dickens Ware is collected today for its strong literary connection, early 20th‑century craftsmanship, and the charm of these character portraits. A Poor Jo bowl is a classic example from the series, appealing to both Doulton collectors and Dickens enthusiasts.
