This blog is about a renowned individual from my home county of Suffolk, who has significantly influenced my collecting interests.

In the world of antique bottles, few names sparkle quite like Hiram Codd. Born in 1838 in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, Codd was more than just an inventor—he was a visionary who transformed the way fizzy drinks were bottled, leaving behind a legacy that collectors still cherish today.

 The Spark of Innovation

Codd began his career as a mechanical engineer, working with cork manufacturers before turning his attention to the mineral water trade. In an era when corks were the standard seal, he saw an opportunity to improve both the bottling process and the consumer experience. His solution? A bottle sealed by gas pressure, using a glass marble pressed against a rubber washer. This clever design kept the fizz in and the cork out—and became known as the Codd bottle.

 From Patent to Popularity

By 1872, Codd had patented his invention and began licensing it to Aerated Water manufacturers. His bottles were so successful that by the following year, dozens of firms had adopted the design. The marble-stoppered bottles became a staple across Britain and beyond, especially in the booming soft drink industry of the late 19th century.

Codd didn’t stop at the bottle. He partnered with Ben Rylands to establish the Hope Glass Works in Barnsley, a factory dedicated to producing the marbles and groove tools essential to his design. His attention to detail and commitment to quality made his bottles not just functional, but collectible.

 Why Collectors Still Love Codd

Today, Codd bottles are prized by antique enthusiasts for their distinctive shape, historical significance, and the satisfying clink of the marble inside. They’re a tangible link to Victorian ingenuity—and a reminder that even the humblest objects can carry stories worth preserving.

Whether nestled on a shelf or featured in a blog post, Codd’s creation continues to fizz with charm.
